Both Uncut and Q magazine are eagerly awaiting the release of MEN’s debut album ‘Talk About Body.’ With Uncut giving the album 4 stars and declaring it ‘hedonistic dance-pop with brainy-sexy lyrics’ and Q swooning over the band merging ‘irresistible funk with swagger,’ listeners should get ready for an earful.

As Uncut misquotes pioneering feminist Emma Goldman, ‘it’s not a revolution unless you can dance to it.’ ‘Talk About Body’ will be released this spring on IAMSOUND Records.

The London Evening Standard lists SALEM’s debut ‘King Night’ as one of the Best Albums of 2010. Of the album, the paper says, “harsh, bleak and frequently very beautiful, the blurry electronica and inaudible vocals from these pioneers in the field of witch house sounded special as well as spooky.”

They’ve also chosen The National’s ‘High Violet,’ which PETER KATIS mixed and did additional production on, and Arcade Fire’s ‘The Suburbs,’ which NICK LAUNAY mixed tracks on.

MEN’s first video officially premiered on Stereogum this week. Stereogum says “Their performances are heavier on performance, but this video for MEN’s “Off Our Backs” is pure eye and ear candy. The latter is mostly due to JD Samson’s singsong chorus, which, like Le Tigre’s best chants, worms its way into your brain.”

The band have also announced UK tour dates, set to kick off tonight!

10/29 – Captain’s Rest – Glasgow, UK
10/30 – Stealth, Nottingham, UK
11/2 – Buffalo Bar, Cardiff, UK
11/3 – Brudenell Social Club – Leeds, UK
11/4 – Prince Albert, Brighton, UK
11/5 – It’s In Our Blood @ Electroworks, London, UK
11/6 – Club Brenda @ Kraak Gallery, Manchester, UK
11/11 – The Thekla, Bristol. UK
11/12 – Theater an Ufer, Berlin, Germany
11/13 – Ladyfest @ Garage, London, UK

“A festival of this size can make for some strange bedfellows, but sometimes you don’t have to strain that hard to find the oddest juxtapositions. At Santos Party House on Tuesday was a showcase for the IAMSOUND record label. Headlining was MEN, the always-fun, queer-politics-focused electro-pop outfit.

Just before MEN came Salem, who have lately been attracting attention for some of the less savory, less progressive aspects of their music.

That the two bands can coexist on the same label, and in the same showcase, may be a matter of mutual convenience, or of relativist ethics.

Whichever the case, the members of Salem probably could have benefited from sticking around to watch the performance by MEN, if they didn’t. Led by JD Samson, who is also a member of Le Tigre (when it’s active, which it mostly isn’t), MEN make inspired, relentless music that treats sloganeering like cheerleading. “Credit Card Babies” was about the logistical difficulties of same-sex couples having children, though it sounded like a pervy come on.

The group members — Samson, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Michael O’Neill — wore hand-painted coveralls, and kept their music squarely in the early-to-mid 1980s, when even the chilliest synthesizers managed to have an air of jouissance.

Many of the songs MEN played from its forthcoming debut album on IAMSOUND have been around for more than a year, including “Off Our Backs,” which Samson said was going to be the first proper single. To close the show, MEN played “Who Am I To Feel So Free,” a song inspired by writings of the artist Emily Roysdon. She joined the group on stage to shout the title phrase over and over again, a cleansing end to a possibly disorienting night.”
